Welcome to Top Children's Hiking. By accessing or using this website, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

About This Site

Top Children's Hiking publishes hands-on reviews, comparisons and how-to guides on the gear that gets a child walking outdoors and paying attention along the way: kids' hydration packs, hiking boots, binoculars, water bottles and rain jackets. Everything here is written for parents and grandparents who want a good walk, not a long shopping list.

Trail Safety for Children

Walking outdoors with a child carries real risks, and the gear on this site does not remove them. An adult should stay with a child on every walk. Pick trails that suit the child's age, stay on marked paths, keep children well back from cliff edges, river banks, cave openings and steep drop-offs, and check the weather before you leave. Lightning, flash flooding and fast-moving water are reasons to turn around.

Heat and cold both affect children faster than adults. Offer water often, take shade breaks, and dress in layers, since a rain shell is not insulation. Watch for ticks, poison ivy, stinging insects and wet, slick rock. Boots that do not fit can cause blisters and falls, so check fit as feet grow. Small parts, straps and cords can be hazards for younger children, and neck straps should be removed for climbing. Follow each manufacturer's age, size and care guidance.

Nothing on this site is medical advice. If a child has a health condition, or you are unsure how much activity or fluid is right for them, ask your pediatrician.
